Healthy eating, exercise and not-smoking are all good for your healthy. However, they may not help you save money on health care.
The New York Times carries the latest Gallup-Healthways Healthy Behavior Sub-Index. Check out the map below to see the states with the healthiest habits:

In this map, Vermont is one of the healthiest states. And yet, the study finds that Vermont residents spent, on average, more than $6,000 per person on health care in 2004. That puts the state in the top 10 in health care spending.
The bottom line: Even if you take care of yourself, you can still be hit with serious medical expenses. And it doens’t take long for these expenses to grow out of control into medical debt.
