Clarity is Key When Dealing With Medical Bills
Yesterday, we wrote about the medical bill problems that can show up on your credit report in error. And while we spoke a little bit about how you can prevent these mistakes from happening in the first place, the Casper Star-Tribune in Wyoming does a better job.
They’ve got a series of tips on how you can keep medical bills out going into collection wrongfully. Essentially, it boils down to clear communication among all the parties involved: You, your doctor and your insurance company.
However, that’s a goal more easily said than done. Anyone who has ever dealt with an insurance company knows there is plenty of red tape. And doctor’s offices may be quick to the pull the trigger on calling a collection service.
Even if your insurance company has agreed to pay for your procedures in full your name is on the bill and you’ll be the one stuck fending off debt collectors and fighting dents in your credit score.
So the Star-Tribune’s medical billing tips boil down to two key points: Reading and Speaking.
- Speaking: Stay in close contact with your insurance company and doctor’s office. Give your insurance company advance notice of procedures. Afterwards, follow up with your doctor’s office to make sure everything is going well and they received what they need.
- Reading: As messy and confusing as it sometimes get, it pays to read the fine print. Check your insurance coverage thoroughly, as well as any bills you receive. Make sure you fully understand your coverage and what the bills say is owed. If you have questions, contact your doctor and insurance rep.
