1 in 7 Californians has Medical Debt – New Study

The New York Times reports on recent findings from the U.C.L.A. Center for Health Policy Research that reveal that 1 in 7 California residents have medical debt.

That comes out to about 2.2 million working adults. But the most worrisome part of the trend is the number of Californians who are in-debt despite having health insurance.

The NYT report is part of a larger series dealing with inadequate health insurance coverage whic they highlight with the story of one couple with medical insurance who had to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy after their bills grew to almost $200,000.

For a quick and clear look at the medical debt’s rise in the face of insurance and the true costs of under-insurance check out the NYT’s well-done infographic below.
